Discovering Zigbee

What is Zigbee?

Zigbee is a wireless communication protocol designed to offer a cost-effective, energy-efficient solution suitable for short distances. Mainly used in home automation and connected objects, this technology aims to compete with Bluetooth and other wireless systems, while being less expensive and simpler. In home automation, Zigbee enables efficient device management, while offering high reliability for home automation installations. The Zigbee controller plays a central role in this management, as it is responsible for the initialisation and configuration of the installation. The controller also manages messages and data flows between connected devices, thus guaranteeing reliable and optimised communication. This solution is particularly suitable for home automation applications, where energy efficiency and ease of use are priorities. The controller also ensures smooth communication between the various devices, thus guaranteeing a consistent and reliable experience in every home automation installation. Thanks to the controller, each device can be monitored and adjusted remotely, making equipment management even more convenient and flexible in the installation.

How does Zigbee work?

Zigbee uses a self-healing mesh system. Even if one device fails, the others can still talk to each other by finding another path. Each Zigbee device, called a node, connects to the others like links in a chain. When a device has something to say, it sends a message to another device, which in turn transmits it until the message reaches its final destination, thus facilitating the management of connections, as a virtual controller could do to manage interactions between devices. This discovery of alternative transmission paths prevents any loss of connectivity, a bit like a central controller that optimises data routing to guarantee flawless transmission between all devices. The controller ensures that all nodes in the system operate harmoniously, adjusting the transfer paths if necessary and thus enabling the Zigbee system to operate in a stable and reliable manner.

Furthermore, if a node breaks down, another path is automatically created and all interactions are not interrupted. This system therefore enables automatic routing and construction of infrastructures, acting as an intelligent assistant that takes charge of redirecting messages to avoid any loss of connection. Each discovery of new paths in the network allows for constant exchange, often facilitated by the use of MQTT, a lightweight messaging protocol. Each module in this meshed system plays an essential role in ensuring the stability and continuity of interactions between devices in your home. When one of the modules encounters a problem, another module takes over, thus maintaining the integrity of the network in your home without loss of exchange, while ensuring that each connectivity and performance test is carried out correctly, a bit like an assistant monitoring the efficiency of the whole system, with messages sent via MQTT for precise monitoring. This discovery of new relay opportunities contributes to the overall reliability of the system. The products in this network thus operate smoothly, offering optimal performance for each product connected via MQTT, which further enhances the stability and reliability of the installations.

There are three types of nodes:

  • Coordinators: There is only one for each Zigbee system. It initialises the system and also acts as a gateway to various other systems, thus facilitating the management of devices in your home, while also performing an initial test of the system's stability, like an assistant who carries out the first checks to ensure that everything is working properly.
  • The router: It participates in the routing of messages, receives them, relays them and increases the signal range in your home, thus ensuring smooth communication between devices, regularly validating its performance through tests. The router plays a key role in maintaining the system's connectivity, ensuring that messages arrive at their destination reliably, even over long distances, while functioning as an assistant to manage the system's performance.
  • The devices: They receive the information and act according to the specific needs of your connected home, each being subject to a response and performance test to guarantee optimal operation. But the router is responsible for managing the transmission of these messages, ensuring that communication is continuous and stable throughout the house, while acting as an assistant to ensure the smooth transmission of data.

Why choose Zigbee?

Unlike traditional protocols such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, the Zigbee network is optimised. It is designed for applications requiring low energy consumption. In addition, it ensures reliable connectivity over short distances, combining energy efficiency and performance. The Zigbee coordinator plays a vital role in this architecture, managing the initialisation of the network. It is responsible for organising and managing communication between the various devices, thus reinforcing the stability of the network. Thanks to the coordinator's action, each device can connect reliably, thus guaranteeing optimal communication within the Zigbee network.

The system has several advantages over other wireless technologies. It creates a mesh between the devices. This means that they can talk to each other and extend over long distances without the need for an additional router. Each piece of equipment in this mesh plays a key role, enabling the devices to work together efficiently, thus promoting a smooth and continuous alliance. The system ensures that, even if one piece of equipment fails, the system remains stable and functional thanks to the ability of the modules to connect to each other, thus strengthening the alliance of the system components, which enriches the range of options available to each user. By using MQTT to manage communication between devices, data is sent in a light and efficient manner, allowing for better control of each MQTT. Thanks to the integration of MQTT, the system becomes even more robust, ensuring optimal communication between all connected devices, while maintaining low energy consumption and constant system stability.

Furthermore, unlike traditional protocols such as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, Zigbee is optimised for applications requiring low energy consumption. The combination of low consumption and reliable connectivity makes this network even more suitable for prolonged use.

  • Low energy consumption: Zigbee sensors run on batteries for years, so you don't have to worry about constantly recharging them, another advantage of the combination of energy efficiency and durability.
  • Extended range: Zigbee reaches greater distances than Bluetooth, making it ideal for large houses, with each detector and device extending the range of the network, thus strengthening the alliance of devices and adding flexibility to your alliance of connected products.
